PCA, DOST-PCAARRD Launch the 2025 National Coconut Research and Development Congress
Thursday, August 14, 2025The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) launched the 2025 National Coconut Research and Development Congress last month, on July 29, 2025, at the Acacia Hotel, Alabang, setting the Philippine coconut industry a transformative boost, driven by cutting-edge science and innovation.
The three-day Congress, themed “CocoRISE: Coconut Research and Innovation for a Sustainable Economy,” convened local and international researchers, scientists, industry leaders, farmers, and industry stakeholders to showcase cutting-edge technologies, share global best practices, and set a roadmap for a more competitive and resilient coconut industry. It featured four thematic plenary sessions: “Innovation at the Roots,” which focused on conserving and enhancing coconut planting resources; “Optimizing Growth,” explored sustainable coconut farm management; “Expanding Horizons,” presented private sector perspectives on R&D innovations; and “Bridging Innovation and Application,” highlighted efforts in technology transfer, policy, and capacity-building.
PCA Administrator and CEO Dr. Dexter R. Buted, represented by Deputy Administrator (Operations Branch) Roel M. Rosales and DOST-PCAARRD Executive Director Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora led the opening rites alongside officials from the Department of Agriculture and Department of Science and Technology. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. William G. Padolina, esteemed member of the National Academy of Science and Technology and former DOST Secretary. He underscored the importance of investing in coconut R&D for long-term food security, sustainability, and economic values.
International experts from Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia also presented breakthroughs on genomics, breeding, climate-resilient farming, pest management, and stakeholder capacity-building.
