Thai Coconut Prices Continue to Rise

Thursday, May 9, 2024

The Week 18 Fruit Wholesale Market Report in the Fresh Plaza report of May 06 said the price of Thai coconuts has been steadily climbing since mid-April and this is attributed to shortages at source.  Young coconut prices have surged from ¥95 per piece two weeks ago to approximately ¥120 per piece currently, a 25% increase.  Polished coconuts are priced slightly higher.

According to merchants, Thai coconut prices typically rise during this period due to supply shortages in production area.  However, the rate increase varies annually. But despite last year’s price hike, sales were brisk as compared to this  year which has been relatively sluggish, attributed possibly to reduced supply or lower demand compared to the previous year.
