PepsiCo UK Launches New Lower-Emission Logistics Initiatives

The company announced on November 10 a series of new innovations across its logistics operation, which are set to lead to a 1,200-ton reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year across its UK supply chain once fully rolled-out.

Starting this November, PepsiCo will power more than one million miles of truck journeys in the UK each year with used cooking oil.  Working with its haulage partner, Pollock (Scotrans) Ltd., the hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) will replace diesel and will be used on trucks travelling between the Quaker Oat mill in Cupar and Leicester. Every mile powered with HVO will have 80% less GHG emission when compared with conventional diesel, the company said. 

Alongside the switch from diesel to HVO for certain trucks, PepsiCo is introducing new electric vehicles to move the 40,000 pallets holding some of Britain’s favorite crisps and snacks around its distribution center in Leicester.  Taken together, the initiatives will help meet the target of reducing the ongoing impact of journeys on the planet.  It forms part of PepsiCo Positive, the company’s transformation program with health and sustainability as the center, which includes a goal of reaching net zero emission by 2040, the company said.
