EC Approves GE Crops for Food, Feed Imports

The Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN), US Department of Agriculture, reports the European Commission (EC) has approved three genetically engineered (GE) crops for food and feed imports for 10 years. Approved on March 31, the GE crops were soybean, rapeseed, and cottonseed varieties.  In addition, one other cotton crop had received renewed approval for food and feed imports.

All four crops have gone through a comprehensive and stringent authorization procedure, including a favorable scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the GAIN report said.  However, the approval and renewed decisions did not cover cultivation and that all products would be subject to the European Union strict labeling and traceability rules, the report added.
