US to Review Tariffs Imposed on Argentine Biodiesel

The US Department of Commerce (USDC) announced on November 07 that there was a “just cause” to review the taxes it applied on Argentine biodiesel earlier this year in February when it deemed that biodiesel imports from said country were sold in the US below fair value, Reuters said.  The Argentine Chamber of Biofuels (CARBIO) said the US decision could mean a revival for the country’s exporters.  

Argentina is a leading producer of biodiesel with export in 2017 at 1.65 M ton worth US$1.224 bn, according to state statistics agency INDEC.  For the period January-August of this year, Argentina exported almost 1.1 million tons of biodiesel, 85% of which went to the EU.  However, no biodiesel was exported in September and October, pending an EU decision on whether the country’s biodiesel is subsidised.
