Biodiesel World Production Up this Year

Oil World estimates show world biodiesel production in calendar 2018 was 39.90 million MT, a sharp increase by 11.4% from same period year-ago at 35.81 million MT.  EU-28 was the biggest producer at 13.40 million MT (13.55 million year-ago), followed far behind by the following (in million MT) United States at 6.85 (6.10), Indonesia 4.90 (2.92), Brazil  4.65 (3.75), Argentina 2.60 (2.87).  Smaller volumes were produced in Thailand at 1.30 (1.20), Malaysia 1.14 (0.72), Colombia 0.57 (0.54) and other countries with combined output at 3.37 (3.11).

The biggest feedsock used was palm oil with Indonesia leading the pack at 4.90 million MT (2.92 million), followed by EU at 3.84 million MT (3.87 million), Thailand 1.30 million MT (1.20 million), and Malaysia 1.14 million MT (0.72 million).  Other countries used less than 1 million MT.  The second biggest feedstock used was soybean oil utilized mainly by Brazil 3.60 million MT (2.86 million MT), the US 3.16 million MT (2.77 million), and Argentina 2.60 million MT (2.87 million) which are major soybean producing countries.
Rapeseed oil was third which was mainly used in the EU at 5.95 million MT (5.96 million).  The other user was the US with only 0.64 million MT (0.62 million). Fourth feedstock in the list was used cooking oil mainly in the EU at 2.08 million MT (2.01 million) as well as the US at 0.98 million MT (0.86 million).  This was followed by tallow which was used mainly in the US and Brazil at 0.58 million MT apiece (0.53 million MT apiece), EU and Singapore at 0.55 million MT (0.54 million and 0.55 million respectively).  The Philippines utilized coconut oil as feedstock at 0.13 million MT (0.12 million MT).
