11TH ANNUAL UCAP GOLF OPEN SLATED
This year?s UCAP annual golf tournament is taking place on Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Sun Valley Golf Club, in Cogeo, Antipolo City, East of Manila. Tee off is set at 6:30 AM. The golf course was designed by Arnold David Palmer, one of the world?s greatest golfers and tagged as one of golf?s ?Big Three? who popularized the sport around the world. The fairways are Tifton 319 and the greens first generation Tiftdwarf. However, what sets the course apart is its location, the hills of Rizal, which present numerous elevation changes, wonderful vistas, natural ponds and waterfalls, among others. COCONUT OIL, TAGGED AS ONE OF TOMORROW?S HOT NEW INGREDIENTS AT NATURAL PRODUCTS EXPOMore than 21,000 industry members, including retailers, pioneers and entrepreneurs, as well as journalists, explored more than 1,500 booths to find the leading natural products of tomorrow at Natural Products Expo East/Organic Products Expo-BioFach America held Sept.23-26, 2009, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Editors and experts from New Hope Natural Media, publisher of Natural Foods Merchandiser, Delicious Living, Functional Ingredients and Nutrition Business Journal, scoured 300,000 square feet of show and identified the top healthy trends for vibrant natural products industry. COCONUT OIL was identified under the Hot New Ingredients category, along with lavender, maqui, agave nectar and ancient ingredients such as salba grain. PEPSICO ACQUIRES BRAZILIAN COCONUT WATER PRODUCERPepsiCo has announced the acquisition of Brazilian coconut water producer Amacoco Nordeste and Amacoco Sudeste (Amacoco) for an undisclosed amount. The move will increase the soft drink giant?s exposure to the attractive Brazilian soft drinks sector, which is expected to register rapid growth in the near future. It can also be seen as the company?s attempt to diversify into healthier soft drink varieties, with the possibility of PepsiCo now focusing on the coconut water category in other markets, including Europe and North America. Amacoco is Brazil?s leading producer of coconut water, making the brand Kero Coco and Trop Coco that together account for majority of packaged coconut water sales. PepsiCo has said it will build on Amacoco?s existing network of independent distribution while utilizing the strength of its local distribution system to expand sales across Brazil, as well as other markets worldwide. The firm also suggested that the combination of Amacoco?s expertise in coconut water with its own brand portfolio and research and development capabilities creates the potential for very exciting product innovation. Coconut water is renowned for its health properties and is often marketed as a sports drink because of its high potassium and mineral content. Combined with its natural credentials, these factors make coconut water a category with huge potential in developed markets, particularly with the backing of a major multinational such as PepsiCo, which has existing expertise in the sports drink segment with its extremely successful Gatorade brand. PHILIPPINE COCONUT AUTHORITY AND JULIE?S BAKESHOPS FORGE AGREEMENT ON COCO FLOURThe Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and Julie?s Bakeshop has signed an agreement to come up with a healthy alternative in making bread. George Abando, national sales and marketing manager of Julie?s Bakeshops explained the recent increase in flour prices has encouraged bakeshops to look for alternatives that result in the same quality that flour provides in baking bread. He noted that some bakeshops? strategy to adjust the sizes of their products to make them still affordable to the Filipino consumers have resulted either to more expensive breads of the same size or smaller breads at the same price. The situation led Julie?s and PCA to come up with a coco-based flour to replace the more expensive imported flour. Julie?s has already introduced the coco-flour based products in its selected outlets nationwide and gained an instant following, according to the bakeshop?s franchisees. Abando said the initial batch of flour was tested for several bread products in Julie?s commissary and the result was fluffier, heavier, and more nutritious bread. Because of its widely popular reception, the coco-based bread product was offered to various local government units as a healthy alternative for feedings program in public schools. Abando said Quezon City was the first to give it to school children for its Strong and Bright Feeding Program. INDIA MAY TAX VEGETABLE OIL IMPORTSTop industry analyst, Dorab Mistry, said an import tax on crude vegetable oils in the new oil year beginning November 2009 seemed inevitable for India. If there is good domestic winter crop, government will have no choice but to impose tax on imports. He added that India?s winter-sown oilseed crop, mostly rapeseed, is usually good when the summer harvest is down. This year, India had the worst monsoon rains in four decades. India?s oil industry has been seeking higher import taxes to protect oils and oilseeds suppliers as imports this year have surged 50% to 7.07 million tons in the first 10 months of the current oil year beginning November 2008. Indian farmers also have demanded higher prices and protection. The country scrapped import duties on crude vegetable oils last year when prices were soaring, but this triggered a flood of imports into the country. Mr. Mistry said India?s imports in the current oil year would be a record of nearly 8.5 million tons and projects a similar level for next year. KRAFT FOODS FIRST TO WIN APPROVAL TO USE PLANT STEROL IN AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALANDKraft Foods has become the first company to use plant sterols to low fat cheese in Australia and New Zealand after it won approval from the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to use polytosterol esters derived from tall oil phytoesterol esters as a novel food ingredient in reduced fat cheese. This is also another regulatory first because no tall oil phytosterol esters have been permitted in the Australia New Zealand Food Standard Code. Marketed on their cholesterol-lowering properties, plant sterol ingredients are a popular option for drinks and spread makers. The level of current interests is illustrated by the announcement from Cognis in their half year results that plant sterols held up the overall performance of its food ingredients business. In Europe, plant sterols are legally available for use in a wide variety of foods including reduced fat cheese but in New Zealand they have not previously been allowed in the food product. THAILAND TO START TESTING B10 BLENDAn Energy Ministry official in Thailand said the country will soon start field test on B10, a blend of 10% methyl ester with 90% diesel fuel, The Bangkok Post reports. PTT and the ministry?s Department of Energy Business are carrying out the tests, which are expected to finish next year. The goal is to widen the choice of fuels available to motorists and increase the share of alternative fuels in the country?s overall energy use. The ministry expects biodiesel B5 to replace all existing B2 in the domestic market by 2011, but B10 use is not expected to be universal until 2022. The ministry introduced B5 in 2007 and manufacturers of diesel engine cars recently agreed to accredit the fuel. ?We are preparing well in advance to have a guarantee for the public about the quality of B10 before mandatory use in 2022,? said the official. The national renewable energy plan projects biodiesel use will reach 4.5 million liters per day, replacing 10% of existing diesel by 2022. Sales of B5 doubled year-on-year in August to 22.3 million liters per day, while B2 consumption dropped 24% to 23.4 million liters. Thailand has a total demand for palm-based methyl ester of 1.8 million liters per day, out of overall methyl ester capacity of 4.4 million liters daily. CANADA TO IMPLEMENT BIODIESEL BLENDManitoba will be implementing a mandate in November 2009 requiring an average 2% biodiesel blend for the entire diesel sold in the province. The average would see the actual biodiesel blends ranging from 5% to 0%, as biodiesel is more prone to freezing during winter. British Columbia will implement its own 5% mandate in January 2010, while Alberta follows with a mandate in July 2010. The Canadian federal government has a renewable fuels strategy that would see biodiesel account for 2% of the country?s diesel usage by 2012. JoAnne Buth, president of the Canola Council of Canada (CCC), said Manitoba was prepared to go ahead with a biodiesel mandate once the provincial production capacity was large enough to meet the 2% demand. She said the newly operational Greenway Biodiesel plant in Winnipeg, with an annual production capacity of 20 million liters using canola oil as feedstock, should be able to meet the province?s demand. While there are number of other projects in the work across western Canada, actual biodiesel production using canola oil remains small. FAT MAY IGNORE THE BODY?S FULLNESS SIGNALS - STUDYScientists from the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center report that fat, and palmitic acid in particular, may signal the body?s cells to ignore the appetite-suppressing signals of leptin and insulin. Palmitic acid is a common saturated fatty acid accruing in foods such as butter, cheese, milk and beef. Despite being a study with animals, lead researcher Dr. Deborah Clegg said that the findings strengthen the common dietary recommendation that individuals limit their saturated fat intake. It also strengthens calls for the reformulation of food products to reduce saturated fat content. The findings of Clegg and her co-workers, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, support such calls. Using rodents, the researchers exposed the animals to fat in different ways: By direct injection of palmitic acid, monounsaturated fatty acid, and oleic acid into the brain; infusion of fats through the carotid artery, or feeding the animals through a stomach tube three times a day. Results showed palmitic acid specifically reduced the ability of leptin and insulin to activate their intracellular signaling cascades, while oleic fat did not. ?The action was very specific to palmitic acid, which is very high in foods that are rich in saturated fat?, said Clegg, adding that the effects appear to last for about three days, which may explain why people say they are hungrier than normal on Mondays following a weekend of overindulgence. ?Our findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets ?hit? with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin,? she added. ?Since you?re not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.?
