PHILIPPINE EXPORT OF COCO
PRODUCTS DOWN IN JANUARY
Preliminary UCAP data show Philippine export of coconut products in January dropped precipitously by 73.7% to 55,895 MT in copra terms from 212,378 MT in a similar month last year. For seven months in a row, export suffered year-on-year losses with this month showing the sharpest cut. Exclusive of data for oleochemicals, gross export receipts in January stood at USD28.997 million FOB based on UCAP estimate. This represents a cutback by 79.9% from USD144.419 million FOB at the same time last year, mainly on account of losses in coconut oil. All products but oleochemicals trimmed down exports during the month. Coconut oil lifting shrank appreciably by 80.1% to only 24,292 MT from 121,766 MT, dragging for the most part aggregate figure for the month. This volume marks a new low from January 2007 at 28,777 MT. Over one-half (52.7%) of total export or 12,812 MT went to Europe while nearly one-third (31.6%) or 7,680 MT was channeled to the US market. Delivery to Japan at 3,800 MT accounted for 15.6%. Likewise, export of copra meal was slashed by a dismal 78.4% to 7,800 MT from 36,031 MT. Korea was the sole importer of this month?s copra meal export. Desiccated coconut export contracted moderately by 14.9% to 6,953 MT from 8,170 MT. Meanwhile, oleochemicals was a standout from the gloom finishing with slight rise of 1.8% at 6,586 MT as copra from 6,467 MT. US COMPANY OPENS NEW NON-DAIRY MARKET WITH COCONUT MILKTurtle Mountain, based in Eugene, Oregon, maker of soy-based frozen desserts, has introduced coconut milk products on the market. The company aims to be the premier coconut milk-based food company in the United States, Marketing Director John Tucker said. Last year, Turtle Mountain introduced coconut milk frozen desserts and the world?s first coconut milk yogurt; by April it plans to introduce the country to its So Delicious brand of coconut milk beverage that pours, looks and feels similar to 2 percent or whole milk, Tucker said. The company has blended a formula of coconut cream, organic evaporated cane juice, and a small amount of carrageen and guar gum as stabilizing agents, which is then fortified with calcium and magnesium, vitamin D, zinc, folic acid and vitamin B12, he said. The milk is set to be unveiled at a major natural foods trade show in Anaheim this month. By April, the product will be available at Whole Foods Markets and other natural food stores nationwide for $4.49 per half-gallon, Tucker said. ?We?ve maid soy based products for 20 years, but our consumers wanted an alternative to soy, so we turned to coconut milk because of its versatility and intriguing health properties?, said Mark Brawerman, Turtle Mountain?s founder and president. Tucker explained that coconut milk contains a different type of fat than dairy product. Its medium chain fatty acids are recognized for their antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Unlike long chain fatty acids, which are stored in the body as fat, the medium chain versions are used as energy by the body. INDIA TO IMPORT MORE SUNFLOWER OIL THAN SOYA OILThe Solvent Extractors? Association of India projected the country?s import of sunflower oil in the current 2008/09 season to jump to over 300,000 MT, nearly 12 times the prior season at 26,000 MT. The increase in market share, which will be at the expense of soybean oil, is being attributed to lower landed cost of sunflower oil compared to soybean oil. The government has not imposed import duties on sunflower oil as it has done for soybean oil. First quarter purchases of sunflower oil in the current season now reached 125,000 MT, nearly five times the volume for the whole 2007/08 season. UKRAINE TO HIT RECORD SUNFLOWER OIL OUTPUT AND EXPORTThe Creative Group, one of the leading companies involved in the oils and fats business in Ukraine expects the country to top its record sunflower oil export volume of 1.874 million MT achieved in 2006/07 crop year. The group projects sunflower oil output of around 2.5 million MT in the current marketing year which began in September as against consumption of 500,000-600,000 MT, leaving volume available for export of 1.9 million MT. The first six months of the marketing year already recorded export of 950,000 MT of sunflower oil, and if the ?positive export dynamics? can be sustained, the country will be able to export the same volume for the rest year of the 2008/09 season. The Creative Group, however, added that the vegetable oil sector in Ukraine was facing many problems including a slowdown in development, the refunding of VAT to exporters of sunflower oil, and the ?permanent attempts of the government to cancel the 13% export duties for sunflower seeds?. CARGILL OIL PALM PLANTATION RSPO CERTIFIEDCargill announced that its first oil palm plantation, PT Hindoli in Sumatra, Indonesia, has received certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The company also reports of continuing efforts to obtain similar certification for all its palm plantations as quickly as possible. Cargill owns and operates five oil palm plantations, two in Indonesia and three in Papua New Guinea, as well as 12 palm oil refineries worldwide. ?Receiving our RSPO certification is a landmark achievement in our continuous effort to have all Cargill-invested oil palm plantations RSPO certified?, said Richard Tan, chief executive officer of CTP Holdings, Cargill?s oil palm joint venture. PT Hindoli is a subsidiary of CTP Holdings. CPO AND CRUDE OIL PRICES NO LONGER LINKED - RABOBANKRabobank said in its monthly report released this week that the link between crude mineral oil and crude palm oil (CPO) is no longer so pronounced, making biodiesel production unprofitable. ?The price movements between palm oil and crude oil appear to show some level of decoupling,? it said. ?While crude petroleum prices have fallen significantly over the past two months, prices of palm oil show the contrary?. Biodiesel production is highly dependent on government subsidies, but one of the major users, the EU, has imposed a requirement whereby carbon emissions from biodiesel must be 35% or less than that from crude oil, the report said, adding that palm-based biodiesel faces significant hurdles in meeting this requirement, and therefore Malaysia and Indonesia are trying to give a push to local sales of biodiesel. BIOEXX TO PROCESS CANOLA SEEDCanadian-based Bio-Extraction Inc. (BioExx), a leading technology company focused on the extraction of oil and high-value proteins from oilseeds, reports its Saskatoon canola processing facility which is nearing completion recently received its first delivery of canola seed in preparation for the commencement of processing in February. BioExx will be producing certified non-GMO oil and meal from the outset of production and will soon follow with certified kosher products. A great deal of effort has been put forth to observe the HACCP (Hazards Analysis Critical Control Points) program as well as ISO 22000:2005 International Auditable Standard Systems-Food Safety Management System, which meet the FDA (United States), CFIA (Canada), and GMP Plus (Europe) standards for good manufacturing practices in food production and food safety. This enables BioExx to supply both domestic and international markets, and is also consistent with the BioExx mission to be a specialty producer of natural food oils and high-value proteins. POLYOLS CHOICE CRITICAL FOR NUTRITIONAL BAR ACCEPTABILITY - STUDYA new study, done by scientists from Jiangnan University in China and the University of Minnesota in the US, says that adding polyol glycerol to a whey protein based bar maintains the soft texture and consumer acceptability of the product during storage. Other polyols, particularly propylene glycol, should not be used as these lead to a hardening of intermediate-moisture foods (IMF) like nutrition bars. The findings were published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The study, led by Ted Labuza, formulated a range of IMF containing between 10 and 40 percent moisture, containing whey protein, and using four polyols namely, glycerol, propylene glycol, maltitol, and sorbitol. The most effective additive for lowering water-activity, a measure of the hardening of the bar, was glycerol which maintained the soft texture of the formulation, followed by sorbitol and maltitol. These three polyols were found to stabilize the native structure of the whey proteins, and slow the hardening of the food. Propylene glycol, on the other hand, had detrimental effects on product acceptability in that it produced changes in the protein structure and stability, resulting into aggregation of the proteins and hardening of the bar texture. NESTE TO CONSTRUCT BIOFUEL PLANT IN SINGAPOREFinland?s Neste Oil will start the construction of a biofuel plant in Singapore this month. The plant, which will be the company?s largest with an annual capacity of 800,000 MT, will start operation in 2010. The refiner is spending 550 million Euros to build the plant as part of a strategy to become the world?s leading producer of diesel from renewable feedstock. The plant will initially cater to Europe?s growing biofuel requirement. Demand for biodiesel in Europe is currently around 6 million to 8 million MT annually but this is projected to rise to 13 million to 15 million MT by 2010.
